Established in April 2009, the School of Electrical Engineering and Automation of TGU was formerly known as the Department of Automation founded in December 1980,  one of four departments of Tianjin Textile and Engineering College. After four decades of development, the school has made due contributions in such fields as talents training, scientific research, social service, cultural inheritance and innovation, international exchanges and cooperation, etc. Guided by principle of OBE engineering education, our school innovates the mode of talents training and attaches great importance to improving all-round competence of teaching staff in accordance with “emerging engineering” standard. The school also pays attention to education on innovation and entrepreneurship, the integration of industries and teaching, occupational planning and joy guidance. Great efforts have been made to cultivate high-caliber technical personnel in specialized fields. 

  

Now with more than 1500 undergraduate students and over 300 graduate students, the school  has three undergraduate majors, two first-level discipline master’s degree programs in Control Science and Engineering and Electrical Engineering, as well as two authorized professional master degree programs in Control Engineering and Electric Engineering. The three undergraduate majors consist of automation, electrical engineering and its automation, light source and lighting, among which automation is the pilot major of Excellent Engineer Training Program of Ministry of Education, the first major of TGU recognized by Engineering Education Accreditation in 2016. Automation, light source and lighting are the first competitive majors of Tianjin during 12 th Five-Year Plan and pilot program for application-oriented  major during 13 th Five-Year Plan. Electrical Engineering and Automation is a major related to strategic newly-emerging industries during 12th Five-Year Plan and pilot major with competitive advantages   of Tianjin during 13th Five-Year Plan. In 2013, the school launched international cooperative education program with University of Wollongong, Australia. In 2017, international  student class was set up, in which the courses are fully delivered in English. Computer Control was the key discipline of Tianjin  during the11th Five-year Plan, Control Science and Engineering was a key discipline during the 12th and the13th Five-Year Plan, and Electric Engineering is the first-class construction discipline.

  

The school boasts abundant and competitive teaching staff including academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, leading talents of National Ten Thousand Talent Program as well as Scientific and Technological Innovation Project”, winners of China Youth Science and Technology Award,  and  National Outstanding Youth Fund. Besides, there is one distinguished professor of Cheung Kong  Scholar Programand one New century National  Talents Project, two New Century Talents of Ministry of Education,and One prize winner of He Liang and He Li Scientific and Technological Prize Fund. There are five persons who are selected into the list of The Recruitment Program of Global Experts of Tianjin. The school  also has three Distinguished Professors of Tianjin, one National  Talent of Innovation and Entrepreneurshipandell  National Advanced Worker, six Discipline Leading Talents among Universities in Tianjin, three first-level candidates of 131 Talent Cultivation Program of Tianjin, one teaching master of Tianjin and two Outstanding Youth of TGU. Now the school has 102 teaching staff , including 20 professors (14 doctoral  supervisors), 36 associate professors and senior engineers and 71 teachers with doctor’s degree.

  

Now, there are more than 1500 undergraduates and more than 300 graduate students in the school. More than 95% of students are employed after graduation, working in  government sectors, scientific research institutions, industrial and mining enterprises as well as industries in finance, electricity, building, communication, tax administration, railway, civil aviation, marine and logistics. They can engage in scientific research, product research and development, marketing service, management and operation or the work related to analysis, designing, construction, operation and preservation of engineering project.

  

Some exam-free undergraduates are recommended to further their studies in Tsinghua University, Peking University, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhejiang University, North China Electric Power University, Tianjin University. Around 20% of our students are admitted as graduate students in universities. Every year there are about 20 students studying abroad mainly in University of Manchester, University of Birmingham, University of Wollongong, University of Southern California, by means of interschool exchange programs and independent application for studying abroad.

  

Now the school sets up National and Local Joint Research Center for Intelligent Design and Manufacturing of High-Performance Motor System, Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Education on High Power Semiconductor Lighting Application System, Key Laboratory of Tianjin on Electric Engineering and Electric Power, Tianjin Semiconductor Lighting Technology Engineering Center, Tianjin Engineering Center for Logistics Safety Monitoring and Transportation Packaging Technology, Tianjin Engineering Center for Advanced Design and Intelligent Control Technology of Motor System, Military Industry Research Institute of Optoelectronic Devices and Systems, IAAT Certification and Training Center of the Ministry of Education, Experiment Center for Automation and Electrical Engineering, Tianjin Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, Tianjin Automated Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center; series of laboratories are set up for specialized research on Motion Control Technology, Process Control Technology, Detection Technology, Power and Electronics Technology, Integrated Automation of Textile, Motor driving and Electric Transmission, High Voltage Technology, Electricity Transmission and Distribution System, Intelligent Building, Robot Technology, Image Processing and Pattern Recognition, Photothermal Electricity Performance Test, Photothermal Electromagnetic Simulation Design, Intelligent Lighting Control, Driving Power Design, Reliability Test, Lighting Product Application Design, Semiconductor Device Capsulation and so on. The school also has lots of laboratories that are jointly constructed by TGU and enterprises, including TGU-Free scale(nationwide) Demonstration Laboratory on Embedded System Design and Application Teaching, TGU-Rockwell Automation Lab, TGU-OMRON Joint Laboratory, TGU-China Textile Electromechanical Joint R&D Center and four National-designated Engineering Practice Education Centers co-constructed by Freescale Semiconductor (China) Co., Ltd., Tianjin Textile Holding Group Co., Ltd., Tianjin Zhonghuan Electronics Group Co., Ltd., Jingwei Textile Machinery Co., Ltd.  “electric engineering and electronic technology” and  “theories of circuit” are selected as Tianjin Excellent Courses .

  

In recent years, the school has been undertaking some scientific research projects such as“National Sci-tech Support Project”, “National 973 Project”, “National 863 Project”, “National Natural Science Fund”, “Tianjin Sci-tech Support Project”.It also launches multiple projects to cooperate with enterprises, and numerous patents and achievements in scientific research have been acquired. There are two  second  prize for National Technological Invention, and  for National Scientific and Technological Progress. There are two first prizes, three second prizes and three third prizes for Tianjin Scientific and Technological Progress.  and one prize for outstanding contribution in industry, university and research institution. Besides, there are more than ten other prizes and  500 papers have been published on SCI and EI.

  

The school cooperates in talents training and scientific research with many international universities and scientific institutions such as University of Wollongong, Sydney University of Technology, University of Pennsylvania, Ohio State University, University of Liverpool, University of Clyde, German Research Institute of Wind energy and Energy, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Kyoto Institute of Technology, Hiroshima Polytechnic University. In 2016, International Joint Research Center for Intelligent Electrical Equipment Manufacturing was approved as the second batch of international cooperation base.
